One person has been arrested following a shooting incident that left the chief of Adanse Dompoase, Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu II, injured during a funeral at Obuasi.
According to a statement from the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, the incident occurred on Saturday, 29 November 2025, when a musketeer discharged a firearm during the ceremony.
The Dompoasehene of the Adansi Traditional Area was reportedly struck by a stray bullet and later hospitalised.
“The Police intervened promptly and arrested the suspect, a 30-year-old Nana Yaw Dankwa, who is currently in custody assisting with ongoing investigations,” the Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, said.
The chief was injured while exchanging pleasantries with the Omanhene of Asebu Kwamankese, the Dompoasehene, and other traditional leaders attending the funeral of the late mother of the Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Faustilove Appiah Kannin.
He has since received medical attention and been discharged.
Dr. Amoakohene said the incident highlights the need for the temporary nationwide ban on firearm use at funerals and traditional events.
“The directive remains a vital public safety measure designed to protect lives, prevent injuries and ensure that community events are conducted in a peaceful and dignified atmosphere,” he stated. “Adherence to this directive is essential for maintaining order and safeguarding the well-being of all attendees.”
The Council urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as it works to preserve peace, enhance safety and uphold the rule of law across the region.
