Commuters in Accra continue to face mounting hardship as persistent shortages of urban transport leave many stranded during peak hours.
Commercial drivers, however, argue that the crisis is largely driven by high daily sales targets imposed by vehicle owners. Collins Owusu, a driver at Bortianor Junction, insisted that drivers should not shoulder the blame.
“Drivers are not to blame. Some owners demand daily sales as high as GHS1,000. To meet these targets, we are forced to operate short trips, especially in the evenings, leaving many passengers stranded,” he explained.
At several major bus terminals across the city, including Old Barrier, Tetegu and Mallam Junction, passengers reported long queues and repeated transfers to complete what should be relatively short journeys.
One commuter described the ordeal: “I had to take a bus from Tuba to Kasoa Toll Booth, then to Mallam Junction, and from there to Kaneshie just to reach Accra.”
