A soldier who was shot during an anti-illegal mining operation in Dormaa Central in January has fully recovered and is preparing to return to duty, the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has announced.
In a statement issued on Thursday, February 26, NAIMOS said Lance Corporal Morris Addae, a member of its task force, was shot in the thigh while on an operation to clamp down on illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, when unknown assailants opened fire on the task force during an operation along the Subinkrom–Kyeremasu stretch in the Dormaa Central Municipality of the Bono Region.
Following the attack, L/Cpl Addae was rushed to St. Matthew Catholic Hospital at Ampenkro, where he received immediate medical care.
According to NAIMOS, the officer underwent weeks of intensive treatment and rehabilitation and has now made a full recovery.
“After weeks of intensive care and rehabilitation, L/Cpl Addae is now in good health and preparing to rejoin his colleagues to continue government’s fight against illegal mining,” the statement said.
During a visit on Thursday, L/Cpl Addae expressed appreciation to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the leadership of NAIMOS, and members of the public for the support he received during his recovery.
The delegation that visited him was led by the NAIMOS Director of Operations, Colonel Dominic Buah, who commended the officer for his courage and dedication to duty and wished him well as he prepares to resume work.
NAIMOS reaffirmed its commitment to combating illegal mining and said it will continue its routine operations in line with the vision of President John Dramani Mahama to protect Ghana’s natural resources.
The statement was signed by Paa Kwesi Schandorf, Media Relations Officer at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
