The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old man, Christian Gyamfi, in connection with a suspected fake gold syndicate operating in the Berekum Municipality.
According to the Police, they arrested the suspect on Monday, August 17, 2026, at his hideout in Wamfie in the Dormaa East District following intelligence-led investigations.
A statement signed by the Bono Regional Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, said the case was reported by Christopher Awuni, 29, a gold aggregator.
According to the statement, Mr Awuni told the Police that in July 2026, four men who presented themselves as gold sellers sold him 110 troy ounces of gold for GH¢1.1 million.
"The gold was subsequently found to be fake and has since been retained by the Police as an exhibit," the statement said.

The police said Christian Gyamfi, during interrogation, allegedly admitted his involvement in the transaction and told investigators that the deal took place at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality.
The Police further said the suspect also identified three alleged accomplices, Abraham, alias Frenchman, described as the alleged leader of the group, as well as Isaac Antwi and Balthazar.
The three suspects are currently at large, with the Police saying efforts are underway to arrest them.
"Preliminary investigations have also established that the group allegedly defrauded another victim of GH¢1.4 million in Drobo earlier this year."
The Bono Regional Police Command said Mr Gyamfi is currently in police custody and is assisting with investigations.
“The Bono Regional Police Command urges the public to exercise caution when engaging in gold transactions and report suspicious activities to the Police,” Chief Inspector Akeelah said in the statement.
The investigation is ongoing as Police work to locate and arrest the remaining suspects.
