Ghana has taken a major step toward a cleaner energy transition by commissioning MT Asharami Ghana, a liquefied petroleum gas vessel, in South Korea on Thursday, March 12.
The vessel is designed to transport LPG efficiently across West Africa.
President John Dramani Mahama highlighted the environmental benefits, saying, “Energy access and the transition to cleaner energy sources remain among the defining challenges of our time.
"LPG plays a vital role in this transition by reducing reliance on charcoal, firewood, and kerosene, which improves public health and environmental sustainability.”
President Mahama emphasised that the vessel reflects strategic planning and regional development, stating, “Through strategic investments and forward-looking partnerships, we are taking practical steps to enhance energy security for Ghana, West Africa, and Africa as a whole.”
He also underscored the importance of collaboration, noting, “The commissioning of MT Asharami Ghana underscores the enduring value of international cooperation.
"It reflects the strength of partnerships between Africa and our friends around the world—grounded in mutual respect, shared prosperity, and sustainable development.”
Concluding, the President said, “Together, we can build the infrastructure, partnerships, and policies necessary to secure a sustainable and prosperous energy future for our continent. This vessel stands as a symbol of progress for Ghana and Africa.”
