A counselling psychologist and ADR practitioner, Counselor Perfect, has cautioned that decisions around infidelity in marriage must be guided not by emotion, but by a clear understanding of consequences.
Speaking on Joy Prime’s Let’s Talk, she addressed a case involving a married woman who had a one-time encounter with an ex-partner and was considering whether to confess to her husband.
Framing the issue beyond morality, she stressed that every decision carries weight.
“Life is consequences. Every choice you make has one consequence or another,” she said, urging careful reflection rather than impulsive action.
Counselor Perfect explained that while confession may ease personal guilt, it could come at a significant cost to the relationship.
She warned that such disclosures may lead to the breakdown of the marriage, particularly if the partner is unable to cope with the betrayal.
“If you confess, it’s likely that the husband is going to walk away because he can’t deal with that,” she noted, adding that the individual must be prepared for outcomes such as separation or divorce.
On the other hand, she said choosing not to disclose the incident requires strict personal discipline and a commitment to rebuilding the relationship internally.
According to her, silence can only be justified if it is accompanied by genuine change, including cutting all ties with the third party and making deliberate efforts to restore trust.
She emphasised that either path, confession or secrecy, demands emotional readiness and should not be taken in isolation.
Counselor Perfect advised individuals in such situations to seek professional counselling rather than confiding in friends or family, who may inadvertently escalate the issue.
She also warned against continued contact with former partners, describing such relationships as potential triggers that must be completely severed.
Beyond the individual case, she highlighted the broader reality that many people struggle with similar dilemmas, where personal conscience clashes with the potential consequences of their actions.
Counselor Perfect maintained that there is no universal answer, but stressed the importance of weighing risks, seeking guidance, and making deliberate, informed choices.
Her remarks underscore the complex balance between honesty and preservation in relationships, and the difficult decisions individuals must navigate when trust is tested.
