A Ghanaian with the 518th Sustainment Brigade, Knightdale, North Carolina, USA is championing the cause of education of children in and around Kisseman in Accra, a community he grew up.

SSG Amezado Raymond heads Ngorli, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to working with children to maximise their potential and also to improving the communities where they live.

On Saturday, Ngorli, an ewe language which means Hope or Future, embarked a 5km walk for education to among other things raise awareness, funds and logistics to be used in educating children in Kisseman and its immediate environs.

The walk brought together stakeholders of education in and around Kisseman with participants bringing along educational materials like exercise book and text books, pens and pencils to be donated to needy kids in the vicinity.

William Tengey, Public Relations Officer of the organisation said in September 2015, which marks the beginning of the school calendar year, parents can come for free school supplies ranging from school bags, exercise books, pens, pencils and any special school supplies upon request.

A small community in Accra, Kisseman is bounded by well endowed communities like East Legon Achimota and boasts of a number of elite schools in Ghana ( Achimota, Accra Girls Legon Presec, University of Ghana and GIMPA, yet it is becoming mission impossible for our citizens to go to such schools and school dropout is becoming the norm of the day,"Tengey said. 

He was optimistic the walk will raise awareness about the plight of the people living in those communities and seek public support to arrest the situation.

"We are trying to promote education in Ghana but we are starting from here. The education in Ghana is going on; we have a lot of children going to school but the quality of education is suspect, SSG Amezado Raymond said after the walk.

"I reside in America and the quality of education in America and Ghana is not the same but we are trying to bridge that gap.

He said the walk for education will help residents living in Kisseman, Christian Village, Alogboshie, West Legon area.
