The biggest opposition party in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has postponed its presidential election scheduled for July 3, 2010. The party has fixed 7th August 2010 as the new date for the election. According to the party’s General Secretary, Kojo Owusu Afriyie, the decision was informed by complaints received from some party members. He told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host, Kwadwo Oppong-Nkrumah, Thursday, the conclusion by the party’s Steering Committee at its recent meeting would also afford the presidential aspirants enough time to tour round the country. “We have had a lot of inputs from people of our party and we thought that we should listen, having examined them and then seen the wisdom in the analyses they were making...it will help them (aspirants) to tour the whole country in order to canvass support.” Immediately the party announced July 3 as the date for the congress, members believed to be supporters of Mr Alan Kyeremanten, a presidential hopeful, criticised what they perceived as a “short notice”, which they claimed was meant to benefit a particular candidate. But Mr Owusu Afriyie rejected claims that the decision was influenced by complaints raised by Alan Kyeremanten’s camp. Story by Myjoyonline.com
