The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is asking government to, as a matter of urgency, reduce petroleum prices.The body says the increment will have adverse effects on standards of living and job security as some companies have threatened to lay off workers to cut down operational cost.The NPA announced a 25/30% upward adjustment in petroleum prices on Tuesday in reaction to increases in the cost of crude oil on the world market and the increase in the TOR Debt Recovery Levy.The Secretary General of the TUC, Kofi Asamoah, has told Joy News the quantum of increase indicates that government is insensitive to the plight of Ghanaians.“Such an increase will have serious implications for the face values of income, it will have serious implications for industry, it will have serious implications for cost of living and then serious implications for job security,” he lamented.The group has expressed its disappointment over the increases and has advised government to take a second look at the prices in order not to collapse industry.He said the TUC wants “a review”, adding, “we want an urgent review because if even you take industry-manufacturing industry-they are struggling to survive...Then sincerely one can say that government is quite insensitive to the plight of the ordinary [man].”He said the TUC is meeting today to discuss further how to tackle the issue with government and would come out with the necessary course of action if government does not heed their request.Story by Derick Romeo Adogla/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
