The son of Ghana’s former Ambassador to South Korea under President J.A Kufuor died in a motor accident in Kumasi last Saturday. Kwadwo Afoakwa Sarpong, 35, was driving a Mercedes Benz car, with registration number AS 5000-11, when he met his untimely death behind the Golden Tulip Hotel, Kumasi around 12:30 am. The deceased was said to be driving at top speed when he rammed his car into a felled tree which had virtually blocked the road from Ahodwo roundabout to Adum, after a downpour. The deceased was suspected to have broken his neck after the accident and this perhaps led to his death, which has come as a great shock to his friends and NPP followers. The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) morgue awaiting autopsy. On the day of the accident, it rained heavily in Kumasi and the strong winds that accompanied the rains felled the tree which blocked the road, Richard Karikari of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) said. Mr. Sarpong, who was driving from the Ridge Police Station area to Adum, did not realise that the tree had blocked the road so he rammed his vehicle into it at top speed, leading to his death. Mr. Karikari said the impact of the crash was so severe that the airbags in the vehicle burst and the vehicle was damaged beyond repairs. He suspected that Sarpong’s head might have hit the windscreen after the impact and that might have broken his neck, resulting in his instant death. The police were called in to take the deceased to the hospital but it was too late as he had already died.
