The Subinso community in the Wenchi District on Wednesday was the focus of a sensitisation programme on bushfire and HIV/AIDS organized by the Brong-Ahafo Students Union (BASU). The association chose Subinso for this year's HIV/AIDS and bush fire awareness creation and sensitisation programmes following the high incidence of bushfires in the community. Addressing the gathering Mr. Anane Agyei, National President of BASU, stressed the need for inhabitants to conserve the area's vegetation since there were lots of benefits that could be derived from it. He said geographically Subinso was at risk of becoming a desert as its location fell within that of the Sahara Desert. M. B. Boakye, Divisional Fire Officer for Wenchi revealed that Subinso was always ranked first in the district with recorded cases of bush fire, while the Wenchi District placed fourth on the regional level. He mentioned negligence, traditional/cultural beliefs, ignorance, accident, arson, farming, and the activities of palm-wine tapers, honey-makers, Fulani herdsmen and cigarette smokers as major causes of bush fire in the area. Mr. Boakye appealed to parents, fire volunteers, unit committees and chiefs to spearhead the campaign on bushfire prevention. He appealed to the government to provide the service with logistics to enable it live up to the task. Stephen Asamoah, BASU Congress Coordinator urged them to protect themselves against HIV/AIDS and not to heed to the demands of some traditions that allowed a man to marry more than one wife.Source: GNA
