Comedian Derick Kobina Bonney, popularly known as DKB, has blamed his poor performance at the Easter Comedy Show on complacency.
According to him, after a good streak of performances as a comedian, he simply became too complacent at the event at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) on April 15.
DKB’s comedy came under intense public scrutiny after former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings walked out of the venue midway through his performance.
The former First Lady expressed her resentment at DKB’s vulgar comedy content.
Speaking in an interview with Doreen Avio on Let’s Talk Entertainment (LTE) on JoyNews, the comedian said he felt he always had the Midas touch until that night.
“A bit of complacency on my part owing to the fact that I’ve never met this situation before played a part. You feel like you have the Midas touch, once you touch, it will fly… you so much have confidence in it till the aftermath comes and you are like ‘it didn’t go well,’” he explained.
Nevertheless, DKB believes “Every comedian has had his bad day” and that, the night was “just one incident and I don’t know why people are behaving like I have committed some crime.”
Asked if he saw the former First Lady walk out of the venue during his performance, DKB said he did but “really didn’t know she was really going to pass those comments.”
He explained that his jokes were vulgar on the night because he felt he was performing for a mature audience.
DKB further noted that, the comments, from the former First Lady, were heart-wrenching and he had to take it in good faith and render an unqualified apology to the former First Lady, the audience and organisers of the event.
