A Unionist has called on local unions to be guided by democratic principles of trade unionism in their approach to management to enhance productivity.
Morgan Ayawine, Tema Principal Industrial Relations Officer of Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) said principles of respect for peoples' views and rights, popular decisions, transparency, probity and accountability ensured peace and harmony at the workplace.
He gave the advice when inaugurating a seven-member executive committee of Nestle Ghana local union for a four-year term at Tema.
King Opey was elected Chairman, Raymond Amoatey, Vice-Chairman,Dennis Arhin, Secretary and John Banor Assistant Secretary.
The rest were Paul Senyo Agato First Trustee, Ofori Addo Second Trustee and Madam Charlotte Okae, a member.
Mr Ayawine called for positive re-thinking of unions in their contributions to national economy and achieving set goals for the institutions through collaboration between unions and managements.
He stressed the need for management to reciprocate the goodwill of workers by motivating them with realistic salaries and benefits commensurate with the nature of their work.
Mr Ayawine advised union leaders to approach labour related issues with objectivity, understanding, diligence and dialogue to promote productivity.
Herve Duranton, Managing Director of Nestle Ghana, in an address read on his behalf, reminded union executives to move away from militancy approach to issues in the past into a strategic partnership with management.
He urged them to ensure peace, based on free flow of communication, consultation, dialogue and strategic compromises to enable both employees and management benefit from decisions taken.
Mr Opey, Chairman of the union urged members to work in harmony with management and seek views from their colleagues to ensure smooth administration during their tenure of office.
He called for unity, co-operation, constructive suggestions and contributions from workers to ensure increased productivity.
