Nana Yaw Kumi known in showbiz circle as ‘Kumi Guitar’ has disclosed that he listened to the music of veterans highlife musicians to enable him to represent the genre properly.
The singer in an interview with Doreen Andoh on the Cosmopolitan Mix said his decision to do highlife evolved when he decided to learn how to play the guitar some five years ago.
He said he had to listen to veteran highlife artistes like Nana Ampadu, Abirkyereba Kofi Sammy, Kwabena Akwaboah and a few others to learn how to properly do highlife Music.
He mentioned in the interview that at the beginning of his music career, he did not know how to play any instrument hence took the decision to learn how to play the guitar to enhance his music writing skills.
"I was not playing any instrument so I decided to learn how to play the guitar to add up to what I already know," he said.
The "1 Litre" hit maker stated that even though he has not had the chance to meet all these veterans, he believes that listening to them has really added more to the music he does.
He spoke of his excitement to have featured some highlife veterans in his latest video to the 'Dream' track.
The video, ‘Dream’, features appearances by Highlife legends, Nana Kwame Ampadu, Pat Thomas, Charles Amoah and veteran music producer, Zapp Mallet.
Although they are not featured on the original song, their appearance in the video was to support Kumi Guitar’s theme of reviving highlife music in the country.
He said Nana Ampadu has promised to help write songs for him.
