School heads in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region will from this academic year sign Performance Contracts to halt falling educational standards in the area.
Teachers who under-perform will face sanctions under the new arrangement.
Education authorities say the measure has become necessary because of the appalling performance of children in the area.
Out of 920 candidates who sat for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examinations, only 352, representing 38 per cent passed.
Three schools; Gyetiase and Aframso Number 2 District Assembly as well as Bimma Methodist Junior High Schools scored zero per cent.
Poor reading habits among students and lack of supervision have been identified as some of the factors militating against good performance.
The new District Director of Education, Emmanuel Kofi Mensah, tells Nhyira FM the situation is worrying because some school heads show little or no concern.
School appraisal meetings, involving community leaders will be also instituted to monitor performance.
Meanwhile, the Sekyere Central District Assembly has endorsed the initiative of the education directorate.
Presiding Member, Ebenezer Afoakwa Sekyere believes education in the area can be improved.
The former headmaster of Prempeh College in Kumasi says proper supervision and monitoring will put both teachers and students on their toes.
