The Ministry of Education says there is already a system in place that allows candidates who failed the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to re-write the exam as pertains with the WASSCE. Speaking to Citi News, the Public Relations Officer of the Education Ministry, Paul Krampah said there has been low patronage of the system by the candidates. He added that some of the students also complain of stigmatization when they are advised to go back to their schools to re-register to enable them re-write the BECE. “The candidates have not been patronizing it, because some of them feel that if they go back to their schools and re-register their juniors will laugh at them. My appeal to them is that they should go back to their schools re-register and participate in the exam”. The comment from the Education Ministry follows calls by some educationalists that candidates to be given the opportunity to improve upon their grades should they fail the BECE. There are indications that almost half of the candidates that sit for the BECE annually fail to progress to the Senior High School level and sometimes are unable to further their education. According to the Education Ministry, it is concerned about the trend and urges students to re-register with their former Junior High Schools, attend classes and prepare for the BECE.
