Some tutors in the nursing training colleges have hailed government’s decision to introduce the quota system in the various colleges.

The tutors, most of whom are in the Cape Coast nursing training college say the quota system will help improve the quality of nursing training in the country.

There has been huge public uproar against government’s introduction of a quota system in the various nursing training colleges.

The move has been described by opposition political parties as a deceptive move by government having reintroduced the nursing training allowances which was abolished by the erstwhile John Mahama administration.

But the Akufo-Addo government is not perturbed by the criticism.

In what will be a refreshing development for the government, tutors at the Cape Coast nursing training have supported the quota system.

The tutors spent time cataloguing to the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyemang Manu how quality training had been compromised as a result of huge number of nursing trainees.

“We have a huge chunk of students, staff nurses and midwives sitting in the house. They are not getting work to do,” she said.

She feared the unemployment situation for the nurses would worsen if the status quo is maintained.

She is convinced the quota system will manage the number of nurses and midwives produced but who would not have immediate jobs to do.

“If we have a sizeable number that we can manage and train and get quality people in the system, I think everybody will enjoy nursing and midwifery but if comes to a situation where the training is not the best because of the huge numbers then that is not good enough,” she said.

The Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang Manu says this has vindicated government.

He told Joy News government considered all these challenges before taking that tough decision.

He said for now, their concentration is on training more midwives and community health nurses to help in the fight against maternal mortality.
