The Anglican Church in the Central Region has stepped up its effort in the fight against malaria and cholera. The church has adopted two clinics in the Central region that record high cases of malaria and cholera.
The church has thus donated medicines and other consumables to the Attah Mills Clinic at Nkanfoaand a Clinic at Efutu Mampong to ease the burden on patients and the health facilities.
Presenting the medical items at the two clinics, the Archdiocesan bishop of the Anglican Church in Cape Coast, Rt. Rev Victor Reginald Atta Baffoeexplained it is the responsibility of the church to assist people beyond the spiritual upliftment and edification the church offers them.
“As a result of the landfill site located at Nkanfoa where the refuse of the entire Cape Coast Metropolis is dumped, houseflies and mosquitoes continue to invade the homes of residents. This makes them susceptible to malaria and cholera. Every year, these communities lead in the statistics of the Ghana Health Service as far as cholera and malaria are concerned,” he said.
The Anglican bishop called on the Cape Coast Metro Assembly to treat the dumping site with utmost care to reduce cholera and malaria cases in the area.
“When it rains, the situation gets worse. The community is filled with mosquitoes and houseflies.
"The Assembly needs to do something about the situation. Even though the church is helping something has to be done,” he intimated.
According to the Archbishop, after the donation of medical drugs periodically, the church also embarks on education in the communities to sensitize residents about the need to stay safe and healthy.
Receiving the items, the nurse-in-charge of the Attah Mills Clinic, Adriana Hammond Donkor, commended the Anglican Church for their show of love and support and asked other insututions and churches to help the vulnerable persons in society.
The Priest in charge of the medical outreach and projects, Rev. Theophilus Odamtey indicated that the Anglican Church will continue to support the needy in the society and help solve common challenges beyond offering them spiritual support.
