The Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana has launched a cultural exchange centre at the Fortune City in Accra to deepen the relationship between Ghana and China.
The centre is expected to run programs that include the teaching of Chinese Language profiency, Business Chinese, Tea Culture, and Chinese Martial Art-Kunfu, Chinese Calligraphy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Shadow Boxing-Taichi and many more.
According to the Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana, Dr. Meilian Mei, the courses run at the centre are targeted at strengthening the bilateral relationship between Ghana and China.
“We believe that we are one and we believe that China and the rest of the world including Ghana are now coming together because of a number of converging reasons and it is just proper to deepen relationship in order to realize our dreams as one,” she stressed.
In 2007, Sunda Real Estates Company Limited partnered with the institute to organize campus recruitment programme at the University of Ghana which was well patronized by many students. According to Meilian Mei, the success of such programs at the University of Ghana and other parts of the country motivated them to launch the centre to further deepen the bilateral relations between China and Ghana.
“It is with this belief and high spirit of building a strong friendship that we host a Centre for Confucius Cultural Exchange within the Sunda Real Estates.
"This centre will have a library and outline many educational exchange programs for students and other interested persons,” she indicated.
The Managing Director of Sunda Real Estates Company Limited, Li Wei indicated that the Confucius Institute is currently offering Chinese language profiency and Chinese cultural courses at eight (8) teaching sites with an enrolment of more than 3000 Ghanaian students.
“With our recommendation and help, more than 120 Ghanaian students have obtained a scholarship and other Chinese for their PHD, MA, one year, or half year study in China.”
“But institute cannot make its achievements without the support from Chinese enterprises in Ghana. Sunda (GH) Real Estates Company Limited is one of those that have provided most support for the institute,” he noted.
