The eight Ghanaian teachers who have been stranded in China could be on their way back home soon. The eight are reported to have secured exit visas and are only waiting to secure air tickets to return home. They each need to raise US$2000 each to be able to buy air tickets to come back to Ghana. Speaking to Joy News from their hide-out a spokesman of the group, Nahim Adams said the Chinese authorities have threatened to arrest them if they fail to leave the country. The teachers however, have threatened to stage a demonstration at the Ghanaian Embassy in China if the mission fails to assist them to leave China. Asked why their families back in Ghana could not help to bring them back home, Adams said most of them are the bread winners of their families and therefore, the families are not in a position to assist them. Meanwhile, the Deputy Information Minister, Mr. Frank Agyekum has told Joy News that the situation of the stranded teachers in China should be looked at in a broader perspective, because there are several other Ghanaians in similar situations in other parts of the world and the government is responsible for them as well. He added that, these situations would also have to be looked at within the constraints the countries’ missions abroad are faced with. He however, gave the assurance that the government will do its best to cater for the situation. Mr. Agyekum also warned Ghanaians to be wary of recruitment agencies that are operating in the country, so that they do not fall victim to any such difficult situation.
