The vice president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has held an emergency meeting with top security capos Thursday, to draw up a new strategy to solving the increasing spate of armed robberies in the country.

The security capos have, at the end of the meeting, outlined a seven-point approach including an enhanced operation calm life attempt by a combined team of police and military personnel to restore peace and security in the country.

Information Minister Mustapha Hamid told pressmen shortly after the meeting that citizens must expect friendly visits by police and military personnel in their communities as part of an intelligence led approach to fight the canker of armed robbery which has claimed a dozen lives in the past few days across the country.

“Don’t panic or be nervous when you see police and military personnel in your communities they mean no harm..” Hamid assured.

Financial institutions have also been directed to install CCTV cameras in all their offices which will be linked to a national command centre, the Minister stated.

The measures taken by the government come in the wake of terrifying armed robbery attacks recorded in the country.

In 24-hours there have been reports of broad day Rambo-style robbery attacks which have led to two citizens being killed by the armed gang.

On Wednesday afternoon, a cashier who had gone to withdraw an amount of 200,000 cedis to pay his workers at Tema was shot in the head and the money taken away.

In Obuasi a woman was stabbed to death in Obuasi after robbers snatched her bag.

Before these two deaths, the Royal Motors in Accra was the scene of violent robbery attack with the armed men running away with an unspecified amount of money after raining terror on workers of the company.

The attacks have led to a growing state of insecurity in the country with some citizens calling for the resignation of the Interior Minister and the IGP.

As part of measures to resolve the near crisis situation, the government has announced, as part of the seven prong-approaches, a decision to strictly monitor and have surveillance of forex bureaus and financial institutions.

The Energy Ministry has also been directed to light up various streets in the country especially areas believed to be vulnerable to robbery attacks.

Except for the president, his vice, the ambulance service and few other individuals with express authority to use sirens, private individuals are not to use sirens, the minister warned.

Mustapha Hamid entreated Ghanaians to report persons who abuse the use of sirens on the country’s roads.

The minister said government sees peace and security as a prerequisite for development and will stop at nothing to ensure peace in the country.
