Help Change Ghana (HCG), a nonprofit organization, has launched its “litter prevention campaign train” in  Teshie- Nungua Municipality and community schools.

HCG works at empowering communities to take proactive actions to reduce litter, indiscriminate waste dumping as well as undertake beautification projects                                                                                                           

Accra’s annual population growth rate of four percent has increased marginally, this makes it one of the fastest-growing metropolises in Africa thus giving rise to municipal waste disposal and sanitation problems.

The city’s increasing population of over five million inhabitants has also resulted in increased generation volumes of waste and litter, creating much concern to authorities responsible for managing the city. 

Despite government’s new initiative on the National Sanitation Campaign project amongst others, litter prevention remains unabated which needs a greater attention and commitment of all.

The Public Relations Manager, Ebenezer Annoh, explained that the ‘Litter Prevention Campaign’ is an awareness forum towards finding solutions to the Ghanaian attitude and waste management problem. 

He said students, stakeholders and community members have an important role to play with respect to litter prevention and can make significant contributions to an equitable and sustainable quality of life for all.

Mr Annoh said, "we are responsible for our personal future, the future of Ghana and the world, and we can make a difference if we act now to make education on litter prevention sustainable and a reality."

Some of the schools the ‘campaign train’ visited include Noble Professional School, St. Timothy SHS, Amen International School and Emmanuel O. Basic School. 

The Executive Director, Elijah Mensah, also said charged the community members about their responsibility to organize regular cleanups and institute an HCG chapter to sustain the vision.
