Some supposed sympathizers of the NDP who thronged the party's congress at the weekend have sharply criticized the organization of the event. Many of them found themselves stranded outside the Baba Yara stadium even as the event was taking place because their identities could not be verified.Leading members of the NDP admit there were some challenges but explain the tight security was necessary because there were people working behind the scenes to frustrate a smooth organization.JOY NEWS' Gifty Andoh Appiah reports that, Members of the NDP called it work of saboteurs but delegates who spoke to JOY NEWS did not mince words in expressing their disappointment with the organization of the function.Although leading members of the NDP admit their congress faced major challenges, they insisted there were people behind the scenes working to ensure the programme became a fiasco. Our correspondents reported that many people were blocked from entering the Baba Yara Sports stadium because their identities as true NDP members could not be substantiated. Many of delegates as well as observers arrived in Kumasi way ahead of schedule. This automatically meant spending the night at the stadium with some organizers of the event who tried to stay awake to put finishing touches to preparations. At 12 am Friday, some people were captured sleeping at the stadium. They obviously had to move out of the stadium the previous day and so they all gathered back there in the morning, including those who had just arrived.
The chaos that ensued on the day of the Congress, was mainly of a mix -up of voices; those sharing their frustrations and those being called non- NDP members who have been planted by some parties to distract the day’s activities. But Chairman of the party, Dr. Nii Armah JosiaH Ayeh insisted, security at this congress was essential due to intelligence they had received. One major attraction though was fierce struggles over NDP branded T-Shirts. Even media men had their own share in the struggle to get interviews. In the midst of the confusion, organizers consistently assured the audience not to fret. Finally, the congress was over and the man of the day, Jerry John Rawlings enjoyed a final applause from the audience before everyone went home after the rally.
