The Chief Executive/General Secretary of the Ghana National Bureau of ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme, Mr. Patrick K. Agyekum has said that the National Bureau of ECOWAS Brown Card Secretariat in Ghana is the next point of call after Police on any accident involving vehicle that enters the country and go out of the country in the ECOWAS sub-region.
Mr. Agyekum said this when he delivered a presentation as part of the ongoing training programme for over 150 Policemen and women from the Ghana Police Service-MTTD drawn from the various Divisions in the Accra region on Wednesday and Thursday, 22nd and 23rd August 2018 at Cleaver House, Accra.
The Ghana police were recently trained on how to deal with accidents involving vehicles that enter the country and go out of the country from an ECOWAS sub-region, which the Brown Card covers.
Similar training Programmes are scheduled to take place in Kumasi on 4th September 2018; Techiman on 5th September, Tamale and Bolga on 7th and 10th September respectively.
“The Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act, 1958 provides that the insurance covers the death of, or bodily injury to a person caused by, or arising out of the use of a motor vehicle.
“The ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme serves as a common insurance cover against Third Party liabilities that visiting motorists may incur while they drive across various national boundaries of ECOWAS. The Scheme, therefore, guarantees compensation to third-party victims of cross-border accidents, thereby leading to the realization of the ECOWAS objective of Free Movement. The National Bureaux are responsible to verify and investigate Brown Card accidents and shall handle claims that may arise. ”, Mr. Agyekum explained
In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Ghana National Bureau of the ECOWAS Brown Card Scheme, Mr. Godfred Djanie said that the Police, being the enforcer of the Road Traffic Act, coupled with the confidence the public have in the Police service, the operations of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme cannot effectively function without the active involvement, education and sensitization of the Ghana Police Service – MTTD.
On his part, ACP Mr. Ofosu Ackaah of Accra Central MTTD in charge of Accra Region expressed delight that the Ghana National Bureau of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme Secretariat has provided these timely training programmes to Ghana Police-MTTD on the Brown Card because manPolicemenen and women are not aware of the existence, operations and features of the ECOWAS Brown Card.
The Police MTTD personnel who participated in the 2 days training program were drawn from Dansoman Division, Airport, La, Tesano, Nungua, James Town, Korle-Bu, Nima, Central MTTD, Mamprobi, Odorkor, Adenta and Amanfrom Divisions.
