General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketia has indicated that the choice of President John Mahama as a leader of the NDC is a God ordained one as it is an opportunity for the people of the northern region to have one of their own as president of Ghana. Asiedu Nketia was speaking to a crowd of NDC supporters in Tamale at the launch of "Zongos for President Mahama" in the Northern Region. He noted that in the 1992 constitution there is a provision on equitable distribution of national and political appointment on Regional bases and by calculation every region should have been heading the presidency for about six years by now. On the contrary, the three Northern Regions is yet to fully enjoy this opportunity. According to him, the three northern regions are entitled to eighteen years of presidency and the north has only been able to serve only two and half years under former president Hilla Liman. In view of this, Asiedu Nketia believes it is now time for people of the Northern Region to lead Ghana and as such the choice of President Mahama is a sure victory in the December polls. The general secretary also said several promises have been made by political parties to develop the north but what the NDC believes is giving power and opportunity to northerners to develop themselves. Northern Regional Minister Moses Bukari Mabengba told party supporters to come out in their numbers and be vigilant on Election Day to ensure victory for President Mahama. Members of "Zongos for Mahama" were sworn by the Northern Regional treasurer of the NDC, Tanko Rashid to work for victory for President Mahama. The group, before the swearing in, toured the principal streets of Tamale on their motorbikes, clad in party colours and singing party songs.
