Commercial drivers in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Constituency in the Central Region clashed with supporters of the incumbent Member of Parliament Dr JS Annan following attempts by the latter to clear weeds on the major roads in the area. The commercial drivers claim the decision to clear the weeds on the roads was only a cheap political gimmick by the incumbent to win votes. Some of the irate drivers who spoke to Joy News said they had been paying road tolls since the coming into power of the NDC but nothing was done to ensure clean roads in the area. They claimed the major roads were abandoned for several years and left to develop pot holes and grow weeds on their shoulders, adding it was after the drivers themselves decided to weed the roads that the supporters of JS Annan decided to do same. The drivers resisted the attempts by the T-shirt wearing supporters of the incumbent MP to weed the area.Joy News’ Richard Kojo Nyarko said the commercial drivers chanted war songs as they weeded the sides of the roads and blocked the road from Agona to Essaman junction.Commuters had to alight and walk to their various destinations.“They completely neglected us. They sent their people to come and collect Assembly tax from us. They know that the road is weedy and they have not taken any precaution on it. So when they heard the gong-gong beating then they also decided to come and weed before us,” one of the drivers said.“We are not weeding the road because of politics but they have turned the thing into politics. It is not fair,” another lamented. But for the timely intervention of the police, the situation would have been degenerated into a violent confrontation.Nyarko said a few vehicles were destroyed and minor injuries recorded.
