The Vice presidential candidates of four political parties – Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur of the NDC, Cherita Sarpong of the CPP, Helen Sanorita of the PNC and the NPP’s Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia are ready to spar in the Institute Economic Affairs Vice Presidential candidates debate in oil rich Western Region of Ghana. The tension may not be high as compared to the presidential debate a week ago in Tamale, but residents in the Western Region are already looking forward to the battle of wits and mastery of economics especially from the two leading political party representatives the NDC and the NPP. The four candidates have two minutes to answer a substantive question, a minute less than what their bosses had a week ago. The three rounds of intriguing question and answer sessions remain unchanged and so is the number of rebuttals allotted to the various candidates. Recounts his professional career at the Bank of Ghana and a book he authored about the economic policy. PNC Helen Sanorita of the PNC She says Ghanaians have lost hope in the political leadership of the country. Leadership is about taking responsibility she assures and believes it is time for the PNC to take charge of governing the country. 1919 Nana Akosua Sarpong of the CPP Introduces herself and switches over to the local language to communicate more with those who find it difficult to understand the language. He is even more grateful because the region provided him a wife. He takes listeners, viewers through his professional life as well as education. He wants to continue the good job of the party. 1917 Candidates have been given three minutes each for their opening remarks. 1915 Rules and Guidelines There will be three segments. Moderators will take 30 seconds to ask each question. Candidates will have two minutes within which to answer. At the end of the debate each candidate shall have three minutes to sum up. Over to the Moderators Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah and Shamima Muslim. 1909 The Chair of the 2012 IEA Presidential Debate Pastor Mensah Otabil takes his turn. He says the the debate will offer the voters to better assess the candidates. He says criticisms have been taken following the presidential debate held last week and hopefully there will be an improvement in the vice presidential debate. He says questions to be asked of the candidates came from civil society groups, interest groups after which they collated and screened. 1900 The Administrator of IEA Jeane Mensah spells out the mission of the Vice presidential debate. She says the debate is so crucial because the position of the Vice President is just a heart beat away from the president. The candidates must be assessed thoroughly. 1830 The Vice Presidential candidates file into the venue brimming with confidence for the debate. 1813 Moctar Bamba National Organiser of the NPP sounds emotive and in a reaction to the Deputy Information Minister says the NPP has done far better than what the minister would have the world believe. He says Mr Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur did little to arrest the declining cedi and has no message for the people of the Western Region. 1811 Deputy Information Minister James Agyenim Boateng is already touting the achievements of the ruling party even before the debate starts. "We have a solid impeccable track record," he says. 1809 Kweku Owusu Peprah of Joy FM reports the Akroma Plaza, venue for the debate is electric with bigwigs of the four political parties filing into venue.
