Pupils and teachers of the Abokobi Presby School have expressed fear in being in a dilapidated 70-year-old structure while the Church and Municipal Education Directorate are housed in plush buildings.

The school in the Ga East Municipal Assembly of the Greater Accra Region was built by the Presbyterian Missionaries and has since not seen any renovation.

There are visible cracks in the building and the plastering on parts of the mud structure has peeled off.

Some of the pupils lament bats have invaded the school and make noise whilst they study. Beyond the noise, the bats stink which forces the pupils and some of the teachers out of the class sometimes.

The compound is dusty and when it rains, learning becomes a challenge, some of the 400 pupils in the school told Joy News' Beatrice Adu.

Teachers are equally worried about the state of affairs in the school.

One of the teachers, Regina Akuoko says they feel insecure especially after an attack on one of the teachers in May, 26.

The teacher was assaulted by a group of well-built (macho) men who alleged he (the teacher) had told them they drove recklessly.

“People who impart knowledge and people who take in knowledge are put under such conditions to study, it doesn’t make it congenial at all,” Madam Akuoku said.

Some of the teachers told Joy News' they are tired of empty assurances by authorities and want action as they say their continuous stay in the classrooms is endangering their lives and that of the students. Abokobi school

Meanwhile, sitting opposite the dilapidated school building is the Presby church. The plush work of architecture is completely covered with beautiful modern tiles with the floors well paved with brick slabs.

The Ga East Municipal Education Directorate which is about 500 meters from the Abokobi Presby School is also housed in a plush green story building with air-conditioned offices.

When JOYNEWS approached the Municipal Director, Florence Esi Damali first to ask about the attack on the teacher, she said, "Everything has been solved. We don’t have a problem, the school has been re-opened," but, declined to comment on the state of the school.
