Residents at Abossey Okai, a suburb of Accra, have urged the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to rid the main roads of vehicle repair and mechanic shops.
At a Community Needs Sensitisation Forum to interact with the Ablekuma Central AMA Sub Metro Officials, the residents expressed concern about the uncontrolled oil spills from the shops, which damage many roads as well as the indiscriminate location of containers.
Global Communities, formerly CHF International, in collaboration with Nimba Community Support Services (NIMCOSS) both non-government organisations, organised the forum to engage the community on their needs, which would be incorporated into the AMA’s planning process for 2013 to 2016.
Participants also expressed concern over the activities of Zoomlion, a waste control company, which often leave refuse uncollected.
Miss Christabel Dery, Assistant Director of the AMA Sub Metro, said the initiative formed part of the AMA’s priority needs aimed at developing a plan for the people.
Mr Seth Kpakpo Allotey, Assemblyman for Abossey Okai, said he would also follow up on the needs identified by the people so that they would be addressed as soon as possible.
He expressed his appreciation to NIMCOSS and Global Communities for the commitment to improve the livelihoods of the people.
Mr Emmanuel Asante, Programme Officer of NIMCOSS, said the community sensitisation programme of the NGO is aimed at inculcating into the people the sense of belongingness and also prioritise development projects.
He expressed the hope that the initiatives would deepen local governance by continually engaging residents and the city authorities.
