The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) says the Achimota-Ofankor underpass remains safe for road users, despite some damage to parts of the “retaining wall” on the stretch.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Authority assured the public that repair works would begin “shortly” on the underpass, near Tantra Hill, in Accra.
The release followed a viral video posted by a group known as Buzstopboys, showing the damage caused to sections of the reinforcement walls of the road.
“An earlier assessment undertaken by our team of engineers revealed spalling over a localised area of the retaining wall. This situation has exposed the rebars, leading to theft by unscrupulous individuals,” it said.
“We wish to assure the public that the underpass remains structurally sound and safe for all users. Repairs would be carried out shortly to prevent further deterioration.”
The GHA condemned the vandalism and urged the public to refrain from tampering with public infrastructure and help preserve the integrity of the roads.
“…Tampering with public infrastructure is a criminal offense punishable by law under the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012, (LI 2180), section 114, subsection 4(b),” it said.
“We urge all residents and commuters to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities around public infrastructure to the nearest police station or the Public Affairs Division of the Ghana Highway Authority.”
The short video posted on TikTok by Buzstopboys attracted mixed reactions from road users, who criticised the damage supposedly caused by scrap dealers.
