An estimated 11 percent of cases of maternal mortality in Ghana has been attributed to unsafe abortions. In spite of the existence of a law permitting abortion, access to abortion services is extremely limited making unsafe abortion a leading cause of maternal mortality in the country. Even many of the women who survive unsafe abortion suffer complications. It is against this backdrop that the Ghana chapter of Ipas, an NGO dedicated to ending preventable deaths and disabilities from unsafe abortion is calling for free comprehensive abortion care services. Country Director, Dr. Jehu Appiah made the call at a seminar jointly organised by Ipas and the Ghana Health Service in the Eastern Regional capital Koforidua. Ghana’s law on abortion allows a woman who is pregnant due to rape, incest, or when the pregnancy is considered a threat to her life, to undergo abortion. “Such a woman who qualifies under the law should be able to have this service free in the public health services,” Dr. Appiah said. He said his outfit would engage parliamentarians and other stakeholders to ensure that the policy is adopted in order to save lives.
