The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has dropped treason felony charges against activist and Democracy Hub convener, Oliver Barker-Vormawor.
The charges stemmed from statements he made in 2022, which authorities deemed as inciting a coup against the government.
Mr Barker-Vormawor was arrested and charged after he allegedly stated on social media that he would lead a coup if the government approved the controversial E-Levy.
The comments led to his detention and prosecution on treason felony charges, a case that sparked widespread public debate, condemnation from civil society groups, and concerns over free speech in Ghana.
In January 2025, Dr. Dominic Ayine announced plans to review the treason felony charge against activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor, suggesting the charge could be dropped.
The fresh move effectively discontinues the prosecution, bringing an end to a legal battle that had lasted for over two years.
