There are conflicting reports over the extent of damage cased by spilled water from the Akosombo Dam on adjoining communities. Volta Regional Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) says the spillage is wrecking havoc on some communities around the Akosombo Dam. Henry Ametepe in an interview with Joy News’ Cyrus DeGraft Johnson cited the North Tongue District and Aveyime as some of the worst affected areas and described the situation as a “national catastrophe.” “The level of the water rose significantly and shortly went above its level and entered the communities. These are very huge communities with very large population densities,” he described. He consequently called for assistance from the international and donor communities, as well as government and well wishers in order to alleviate the plight of the residents in the affected communities. His report contradicts that of the National NADMO coordinator, Kofi Portuphe and that of the officials from the Volta River Authority who predicted a quiet spillage with less disastrous effects. According to Joy News’ Eastern Regional Correspondent, Benjamin Tetteh, residents of Asuogyaman and other communities up-stream have also been affected by the spillage. He said over 600 residents have been displaced by the flood waters forcing NADMO to look for relief items for the affected persons. Other surrounding areas of Akosombo have complained about the rise of the water level but are yet to complain of any disaster. Tetteh said his visits to Akuse and Kpong show some fishermen busily fishing. Public Relations Director of the Volta River Authority, Getrude Koomson said the situation is not as alarming as the Volta Regional coordinator reports.
