Akufo-Addo reaffirms commitment to media freedom

President Akufo-Addo has underscored his government's unwavering support for a free and independent press in the country.

Delivering the keynote address at the 3rd African Media Convention, he highlighted the crucial role that a free press plays in the democratic process.

He emphasised that independent media is essential for holding governments accountable and ensuring transparency.

“The government of Ghana is committed to supporting a free and independent media. We are dedicated to creating an enabling environment for journalists to work effectively and without fear,” he stated.

Addressing the challenges faced by the media, the President acknowledged the rapidly evolving landscape driven by technological advancements and changing consumer habits.

He urged journalists to embrace new technologies and innovative practices to not only survive but also excel.

“In this ever-changing environment, it is imperative for media practitioners to adapt and innovate. Embracing new technologies and modern practices will ensure that the media remains relevant and continues to play its critical role in our society,” he said.

During his speech, President Akufo-Addo also highlighted the importance of safeguarding journalists' rights and ensuring their safety.

He reiterated his administration's commitment to implementing policies that protect journalists and promote press freedom.

“Journalists must be able to operate without fear of intimidation or harm. Our government is dedicated to upholding these principles and ensuring that the media can perform its duties without interference,” he asserted.

The 3rd African Media Convention which was held at the Accra International Conference Centre, brought together journalists, media professionals, and stakeholders from across the continent to discuss the future of media in Africa.

It served as a platform for dialogue and exchange of ideas on how to strengthen media institutions and support sustainable journalism in Africa. Participants discussed various topics, including digital transformation, media ethics, and the economic sustainability of news organizations.

The Africa Media Convention (AMC) is an annual conference held to reflect on the fundamental role of journalism on the continent, celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, and deliberate on measures to safeguard media freedoms.
