Vice President John Mahama and his immediate predecessor Alhaji Aliu Mahama have urged Muslims to prioritize education.
The two were speaking at the funeral of the late Chief Imam of the Ashanti Region.
The ceremony also saw the installation of a successor to Alhaji Imrana Musa, who died last week at the age of 67.
“In the Muslim and Northern communities we must seek education because it is what is going to free us from poverty. So let’s continue to encourage our young people, not only to go to school, but to stay in school. It’s not enough to go to school and drop out half-way. We must learn to stay in school till when their potential can take them,” John Mahama said.
People from Muslim communities have long been perceived to be less interested in pursuing education.
It was significant then that both the former and the present vice presidents highlighted the issue at the gathering.
The three northern regions are thought to be among the poorest in the country.
Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroon, who until now was Deputy Chief Imam, assumes substantive status as the Ashanti Regional Imama, with Sheikh Zakaria Abdul Rahman as the new deputy.
