Award winning actress, Ama K Abebrese celebrated her birthday on Friday and to mark the day, she, together with her friends, donated blood to the Police Hospital in Accra. The actress was joined by some renowned personalities including actress Nana Ama McBrown and musician D-Cryme for a breakfast at the Africa Regent Hotel before the donation. At the breakfast, Ama K Abebrese’s mother, celebrities and friends joined her to cut her birthday cake with a wish that the future brings more blessings on her. The blood donation, which was her widow’s mite to help replenish the hospital’s blood bank, witness some of her friends donating about seven pints of blood to the Police Hospital which is currently under a lot of pressure due to the nationwide strike by doctors. The 2011 Best Actress in a Leading Role at the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAAs) told Myjoyonline.com after the donation that she was inspired by a friend, a medical doctor to donate blood. According to her, “there is usually a shortage [of blood] in Ghana. A lot of people are afraid to donate I think they think that there is some kind superstition, people have so many reasons why they are afraid to donate.” As it is her birthday, she wanted to give something back to society: “I am not a fan of needles per say but to be able to save a life, I thought this is one of the greatest things I could do, to not only thank God for adding another year to my life but also by donating blood [for a good course].”
