The woman at the center of the controversial mass rape story, Amina Mohammed, has been granted bail by the Human Rights Court in Accra.
Justice Paul Peter Derry, who sat on the case, granted her bail to a tune of GHS 5,000.
Lead counsel for Amina, Mr Andy Appiah-Kubi, pleaded with the court to issue an order to the lower court six – the court that remanded Amina in police custody – to ensure the execution of the bail.
Director of Public Prosecution, Getrude Aikins, had prayed the court not to grant the bail for Amina’s own safety, citing the controversial nature of the story but Lawyer Appiah-Kubi disagreed and stated that if people’s safety can only be guaranteed in prison, then all Ghanaians should be imprisoned so that government can protect them better.
According to Yaa Asantewaa of Asempa News, Justice Derry noted that since the case was a criminal one, he had to ensure Amina is given a bail.
Amina was arrested last week and charged with publishing false information to cause fear and panic on Monday.
