President John Mahama has filed his nomination forms to contest the 2016 election, another step that officially re-ignites another fierce contest with the main opposition candidate, Akufo-Addo.
Vice-President Kwesi Amissah Arthur who is President Mahama's running mate presented the nomination forms at the head office of the Electoral Commission in Accra
It was received by the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Charlotte Osei at about 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
The President only returned from UN General Assembly meeting in the United States Thursday morning.
There was wild jubilation at the premises of the Electoral Commission as supporters sang and danced around as the Vice-President touched down on the premises.
Placards boasted that the presidential elections slated for December 7 will be a one-touch victory for the President. The winner of the polls must obtain a 50% plus one to dismiss the possibility of a run-off.
The President is hopeful that there will be no need for a run-off, a situation which could see other opposition candidates ganging up for him or against him.
The 2016 general elections is predictably a two-horse race between President Mahama and perennial challenger Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the opposition New Patriotic Party.
John Dramani Mahama was elected to serve his first term as President in the December 2012 elections.
Mahama won the last elections with 50.70% of the total valid votes cast and a 3% winning margin beating his nearest rival, Akufo-Addo who polled a close 47.74%.
This was just barely enough to win the presidency without the need for a runoff. In addition, Mahama won the majority of valid votes cast in eight out of Ghana's ten administrative regions.
The communication expert took over from President John Evans Atta Mills who died in office in July 2012.
Mahama had spent 12 years as a Member of Parliament from 1997 to 2009 and was once time Minister of Communications from 1998 to 2001 under the Rawlings-led NDC administration.
