Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has had to cancel Asamoah Gyan's Christmas getaway plans, according to The Mirror.
Under the impression that the Premier League had a break over the Christmas period, Sunderland's Ghanaian striker Gyan booked a flight home to see his family.
The club's record signing was initially due to jet home on Thursday after being given leave for the forthcoming FA Cup tie against League One side Notts County.
Gyan is said to have asked Bruce a few weeks ago about his proposed homeward trip, yet was amazed to find out that the English calender becomes even more congested this time of year.
Compassionate Bruce has allowed Gyan to make a four-day trip though this Sunday, seeing as the forward was deprived of seeing his family over Christmas.
However, Gyan's absense adds to an increasingly woeful Sunderland injury list, with David Meyler now sidelined long-term, Danny Welbeck out with a hamstring strain and Boudewijn Zenden suspended.
