The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly has stopped traders from selling on the streets following a fatal accident that claimed at least one life and injured many.

Shortly after the freak accident, the traders returned to the unapproved points to sell their goods, to the dismay of many.

The Assembly has, therefore, constituted a special taskforce to ensure the traders do not continue putting their lives in danger.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Assembly, Albert Boakye Okyere, told reporters the taskforce has been charged to permanently stop traders from breaching road markings to sell their goods.

He said the thirty-man taskforce will conduct all-day patrols all week, while efforts to relocate traders are finalised.

“We are not going back, we will station people here permanently while we also find an alternative space for the traders,” he assured.

Accident

Pandemonium hit the Ashaiman Municipality last week when a KIA truck run through some traders and pedestrians, killing one and injuring six others.

The truck with registration number ER 5112X was loaded with cement blocks and headed towards the Ashaiman traffic light at the heart of the municipality when it lost control and run into the traders selling on beyond street markings.

The Ashaiman Police Divisional Commander, ACP Peter Gyimah, said “we heard of the news and rushed to the scene, and as our duty was, we first had to secure the lives of the people. So we conveyed the victims to the hospital and have also secured the area.”

He said a follow up to the hospital confirmed the death of one female victim with six others sustaining various degrees of injury, of which one was a critical case.
