Leaders of Africa and Europe have devised an urgent plan to evacuate all migrants trapped in Libya back to their home countries.

Libya’s UN-backed Prime Minister, Fayez Sarraj has agreed to grant access to detention camps for the repatriation of the migrants.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) will supervise the evacuation process, the leaders decided.

The plan was drawn at a joint African Union and European Union Summit held in the Ivorian capital, Abidjan Thursday.

The crisis meeting was triggered by CNN footage from Libya that showed African migrants being auctioned off in open slave markets for as little as $400 (¢1818).

President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said, the slave situation in the North African country questions the “alleged solidarity” among African nations.

He has sanctioned an evacuation exercise that has seen at least 127 Ghanaian migrants brought back home Wednesday night.

Nigeria has also flown more than 200 citizens back to the country on Tuesday.

The emergency evacuation exercise will be executed in the “next few days,” French President Emmanuel Macron told media at the end of the meeting.

But some experts have expressed doubts about the success of the plan because the internationally-recognised leader of Libya has limited control over the territory.

They are questioning how the evacuation exercise will work in practice.
