At the Accra suburb of Avenor, a group of children stand on a concrete slab surrounded by a stew of mud and trash.
Their home, a makeshift wooden structure, was ravaged by the floods after one of Accra’s worst rains in many years.
Avenor used to be flood-prone but the big Odaw drain, constructed many years ago ensured runoff water was effectively channeled away.
The situation was however different last night.
“All my belongings have been destroyed. I have nothing left now,” Esi, a mother of two, lamented.
Across the street are other homes also badly affected. Water rose to the window levels of homes.
On a Thursday morning when people should have been going to work, many of them are wading through muddy water.
Around the area, owners of car garages are opening the doors to their fleet of vehicles, inspecting every detail – most of the vehicles were flooded.
