Some cyber security experts have called on the general public to be circumspect when browsing the internet to avoid falling prey to malicious attacks.
The call comes on the back of a notice issued by the Cyber Security Authority on the increase of job scams in the past few weeks.
A lot of the plots or attacks are done through phishing to trick individuals into divulging sensitive information through the use of seemingly legitimate emails, phone calls and even websites. It also extends to social media messages as well.
Another method of these scammers is social engineering. This system preys on the ignorance of victims by exploiting their vulnerability. Attackers usually manipulate victims by talking or chatting them into performing specific actions or parting away with vital information or money.
Speaking to Joy Business, Cyber Security Expert and Chief Executive of Global Secure Solutions, Edem Glymin emphasised the need for increased education on social engineered and phishing scams.
“Education on the risk of social engineering and conducting regular training sessions will help decrease the rate of phishing”.
He explained that “it is very important to remain vigilant and aware so as not to fall prey to such schemes.”
He further admonished businesses to invest in cybersecurity solutions to safeguard their assets and staff from phishing and social engineered attacks.
“Understanding these risks is very crucial for businesses. Implementing comprehensive cyber security measures is very vital. Employee education and continuous training sessions decreases the risks of these attacks.”
The Cyber Security Authority continuous to embark on various sensitizations on some of these risks. It admonishes the general public to call or text 292 in the case of a suspected breach.
