The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has cautioned Ghanaians against a surge in AI-generated deepfake videos being used to promote fraudulent investments and unapproved drugs.
In a statement issued in Accra, the CSA said the manipulated videos feature the likeness of national leaders, ministers, Members of Parliament, government officials, and even well-known media personalities. The fabricated clips, widely shared on platforms such as Facebook, attempt to trick viewers into believing these figures endorse fake financial schemes or unsafe medical products.
According to the Authority, cybercriminals use Artificial Intelligence tools to create highly convincing videos and voiceovers. Victims are lured with promises of guaranteed high returns on non-existent investments or "miracle cures" for conditions like diabetes and obesity.
These schemes, CSA warned, ultimately result in financial loss, identity theft, or exposure to harmful substances.

The CSA urged citizens to remain vigilant by spotting warning signs of deepfakes, such as off-sync lip movements, strange eye blinking, unnatural voices, or inconsistent lighting in the videos. It stressed that official endorsements should always be verified through credible government or regulatory sources.
The Authority further advised against sharing personal or financial details with unverified platforms, urging the public to confirm all investment offers with the Bank of Ghana and all health-related claims with the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).
To curb the menace, CSA disclosed that it is collaborating with social media companies, law enforcement, and other state institutions to trace and remove these malicious videos and prosecute those behind them.
For assistance or to report suspected cybercrimes, the CSA has made available a 24-hour Point of Contact: Call or Text 292, WhatsApp 0501603111, or Email report@csa.gov.gh.
