Authorities of the University of Ghana, Legon, have called on the public to be on the lookout for unscrupulous persons issuing fake admission letters to unsuspecting members of the public and offering them various courses.
One of such letters is offering admission for students to pursue Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Political Science- a course that does not exist at the university.
Those unscrupulous persons are also offering admissions to such victims to enter the University to begin programmes in January and the authorities have reminded prospective applicants that the university does not admit undergraduate students during the second semester of an academic year.
The Public Affairs Director of the university, Mrs Stella Amoa, told the Daily Graphic that one of such fake admission letters intercepted by the authorities for instance, indicated that admission was being offered to a candidate to undertake a BSc programme in Political Science and Sociology; the candidate was offered a non-existing BSc programme.
According to her, there was no such programme being offered at the university and advised that anyone who had fell prey to such a scam should report to the police for those behind the practice to be apprehended.
“Admissions have been a problem and we want parents and guardians to be aware. This is why we are being proactive,” she said.
Mrs Amoa noted that the university authorities had begun investigations to trace the source of the fake letters to bring the perpetrators to book.
A public alert issued by the university indicated that it had come to the attention of management that “certain individuals were issuing letters purporting to offer admission to students into some programmes at the University of Ghana for an academic year that begins on January 25, 2012”.
“It should be noted that the University of Ghana does not admit students into its undergraduate programmes at the beginning of the second semester. The general public and all those desirous of seeking admission into programmes at the University of Ghana are asked to be vigilant so as not to fall prey to such fraudulent acts,” it warned.
The public alert signed by the Registrar of the university, Mr J.M. Budu, said information about admissions at the University of Ghana could be verified at its website: www.ug.edu.gh.
