There was confusion at the Decathlon Store in Accra when judges declared a technical draw for the fight between Ghanaian boxer, Bastie Samir, and Nigerian Rasheed Idowu, despite the former getting knocked out in a UBO light heavyweight title bout on Saturday.
Samir, who handed Bukom Boxing his first professional defeat, was sent to the canvas in the second round with a flurry of vicious hooks and failed to recover before the referee proceeded to end the bout.
With expectations that the Nigerian would be declared winner by Technical Knockout (TKO), the judges instead, declared the fight a Technical Draw, much to the surprise of the teeming patrons.
The result has drawn massive criticism across the board since everything points to a win for the Nigerian.
So, how exactly did this happen?
Joy Sports editor, Nathaniel Attoh, who followed the fight, believes security threats might have informed the decision.
“I've had a conversation with the president of the Ghana Boxing Authority, Abraham Kotei Neequaye, and his explanation is that this decision was taken in the interest of the security of the boxers.
“Now, according to him, there was a threat of a violent outburst because the home boxer had lost, because of which this decision was declared a technical draw.
“And the UBO, I am told, has also stated that they have declared Idowu the winner of this bout.
“Now, the expectation is that the Ghana Boxing Authority will release a statement to this effect, so that we can all move on.”
