A seven-year-old class one pupil met his untimely death when he slipped on a bridge and fell into River Pru on his way to school at Sefwi Agyemang Camp in the Sefwi Wiawso District of the Western Region.
The incident occurred when the pupil, Federick Amo joined his colleagues to play a fun game called ‘Blind’ in which they competed among themselves to find out who among them could close their eyes and walk across the bridge without any help.
According to the police, Federick closed his eyes and attempted to cross the bridge, but slipped and fell into the river. He drowned before he could be rescued that morning.
The Sefwi-Wiawso District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr Raymond Ezuah, confirmed the incident and described it as unfortunate and sad.
He said in the early hours of Wednesday, the headmaster of the school reported the incident to the police.
He said the police moved quickly to see if they could help, but unfortunately, the boy was found dead.
He was particularly disturbed because the bridge was not a footbridge but a bigger one that vehicles used from time to time. He said it was rather unfortunate that the child had lost his life.
The district police commander used the opportunity to advise members of the two communities to talk to their children about the dangers of playing games on the bridge.
Local residents said the children left their homes at Asantekrom on their way to school at about 7a.m. when the unfortunate incident happened.
The children were not accompanied by any adult as they were crossing the bridge from Asantekrom, a farming community of the Sefwi Agyemang Camp Methodist School where they attend school.
According to them, commuting from Asantekrom to the school at Agyeman Camp was a daily routine for the children.
The body has since been deposited at the Wiawso Government Hospital.
