Boxer Bukom Banku has told Joy Sports he is ready for his dream world title fight after recording a technical knockout win over Hamza Wandera at the weekend at the Accra Stadium.
Bukom Banku has been looking forward to a big date with WBO champion, Nathan Cleverly since winning the WBO Africa light heavyweight title last year.
The undefeated boxer, who is known for his creativity, entered the ring carrying a sewing machine with a loaf of bread fixed in the middle to create a lot of excitement ahead of the bout which was to last only three rounds.
Banku was shocked in the first round with a knockdown by the Ugandan-born Wandera who had a good reach. This was the first knockdown of Banku’s career and he managed to beat the count by Referee Roger Barnor.
The second round saw Banku attacking more and landing some heavy jabs. But these were answered on a few occasions with some straight head jabs from Wandera who was attempting to fulfil his promise of ‘pounding’ Bukom Banku’s head out and knocking him out.
Wandera in protest to a supposed head but by Bukom Banku turned his back twice and refused to continue fighting forcing Referee Roger Barnor to end the bout. Wandera knocked Bukom Banku down for the first time in his career in round one but failed to make good of this his advantage.
‘I don’t undertstand why the Referee did not allow me to express myself. Kamoko gave me a head butt and I was expecting the Referee to do smoothing about it but he didn’t. Well I need a rematch but it will only be when there is a Referee other than a Ghanaian and non Ghanaian judges as well. Then I wll box good and knock Kamoko out,’ a disappointed Wandera told Joy Sports.
By this win, Bukom Banku also known as Brimah Kamoko, has improved his record to 23 wins and says the world title is his next target. ‘Right now I want to move forward and the world title fight with Nathan Cleverly is my next target,’ Banku told Joy Sports’ Nathaniel Attoh after the bout.
There were some debateable results for Ghanaian boxers on the night which many fans at the Accra Stadium disagreed with. Joshua ‘Bukom Tsatsu’ Okine struggled to win against Amilcar Funes of Argentina, 119-108, 119-109, 119-108 to annex the WBO Africa welterweight title.
Eben Lamptey also received a stiff challenge from Equiador’s Eduardo Flores but managed to win unanimously on the score cards to clinch the WBO Africa lightweight title. Samuel Amoako also recorded a majority decision against Martin Haikali of Namibia to win the WBO Africa Super Lightweight title.
