The Police have arrested a man said to be the leader of a carjacking syndicate operating in Accra.Stephen Aglago, alias WO and his accomplice Richard Agyapong were picked up on 28 October, 2010 upon a tip-off.Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Greater Accra Regional Police Commander Rose Bio-Atinga said the two have admitted dealing in stolen cars. She said the syndicate laid ambush at the homes of prospective victims, mostly private car owners, and robbed them of their vehicles.Taxi cabs have also fallen victim to the activities of the syndicate, she noted. On receiving the tip-off, Rose Bio-Atinga said personnel from her outfit went to Akim Oda where the suspected gang leader was said to be residing and tricked him into believing that another car had been brought from Accra and was parked at a hotel for sale. The two suspects came to the hotel to take custody of the vehicle culminating in their arrest.“On interrogation the two admitted having received a number of stolen vehicles from a gang of robbers in Accra and have sold them to individuals in Akim Oda, Akwatia, Boadua, Somanya and Kumasi,” she said. The two are to appear before court for prosecution.Meanwhile the regional police commander told Joy News’ Fiifi Koomson that prospective buyers of cars must ensure that the cars are covered by the necessary documents before buying them. She warned that the buyers of those vehicles are equally liable for prosecution as the carjackers, if caught.
