Chelsea are keen to wrap up a deal for Augsburg left-back Abdul Baba Rahman after Filipe Luis returned to Atletico Madrid.
The Spanish club have re-signed the Brazil international for close to the £16 million they sold him for last summer, paving the way for the pursuit of the £14m-rated Ghanaian, the Evening Standard is reporting.
Rahman would like assurances that he will get to play regularly, given Luis started only nine league games last season, but it is thought he favours a move to the English champions ahead of Roma.
The Italian club had been favourites to sign him as the Luis sale dragged on, but with his transfer confirmed Jose Mourinho is ready to make his move for his preferred replacement.
Rahman is raw, and at only 21 years-old he has a lot of potential to grow into. But he was voted the best left-back in the Bundesliga last season and is eight years Filipe Luis' junior.
He will provide further competition for Cesar Azpilicueta, who remains Jose Mourinho's first choice left back. At £14m it looks a smart move for Mourinho to make as he looks to flesh out his squad ahead of the new season.
